New Pilot Program: Skilled Workers from the Philippines

On October 19, 2023, the Canadian government initiated a new initiative known as CAN Work Philippines, which facilitates the hiring of skilled Filipino workers by Canadian employers. It simplifies the process for obtaining work permits and allows for group appointments for medical examinations and biometric procedures. The program is available to Canadian employers looking to hire 50 or more workers, especially in critical industries such as healthcare, construction, and agri-food. Participating employers are required to follow the fair and ethical recruitment guidelines set forth by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Additionally, the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada) is providing $200,000 to the IOM to promote fair and ethical recruitment standards in the Philippines. These collaborative efforts aim to strengthen the partnership between Canada and the Philippines while addressing labor shortages in the Canadian economy.

According to Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, a considerable number of temporary foreign workers from various countries come to Canada annually, contributing their expertise to bolster our economy and bridge gaps in the labor market. This group includes a significant portion of newcomers hailing from the Philippines. The introduction of the CAN Work Philippines pilot program will provide Canada with a noteworthy edge in the global competition for skilled individuals and assist our industries in tackling labor market shortages. Simultaneously, the financial support directed towards the IOM underscores our unwavering dedication to upholding just and ethical recruitment procedures, with the aim of safeguarding the well-being, safety, and overall quality of life for temporary foreign workers.
