Allocation of $260,000 for Internationally Trained Nurses

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has allocated over $260,000 to provide support to the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador and the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador. This assistance aims to expedite the licensure process for internationally educated nurses who are applying to work in the province. As a matter of fact, Canada faces a healthcare labour shortage and is actively seeking professionals from other countries to address the growing demand for quality healthcare services caused by an aging population and retiring practitioners.

The funding will be utilized in the following ways:

– Enabling the implementation of a call-answering service contract for both organizations, allowing them to promptly address inquiries pertaining to recent regulations.
– Establishing a Registration Support Assistant position to facilitate the processing of applications and provide guidance and support to internationally educated nurses.
– Introducing an incentive program through Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services (NLHS) to assist eligible candidates with the costs associated with the National Community Assessment Service Program.

The regulatory authorities have made recent amendments to the Registered Nurses Regulations with the aim of streamlining the registration and licensing procedures for registered nurses. These financial provisions align with the aforementioned amendments. Moreover, these measures will make it more convenient for nurses educated outside the province, including internationally educated nurses, to pursue employment opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador. The funding also aligns with the recommendations of Health Accord NL, which seek to enhance the recruitment and retention of healthcare professionals.
