Retail Jobs in Demand in Canada

The holiday season is approaching and Canadians are busy looking for the best gifts for their peers and loved ones. Unlike last year, pandemic restrictions are mostly lifted, resulting in more customers shopping in-person rather than online. Canadians are eager to go to malls and see items physically rather than a picture on a website. Therefore, retail businesses are looking to hire more positions in order to prepare for the massive influx of customers going to their stores. Today, retail jobs are in high demand throughout Canada.

HIGH DEMAND

According to a recent survey by JLL, 72% of consumers today will likely shop in stores physically, which is an increase not only from pandemic levels, but from pre-pandemic levels of 2019. However, according to Statistics Canada, despite the increased interest in both consumer spending and physical shopping, job vacancies remain at a very high level. Businesses are struggling to find local hires that they are now open to look internationally

To aid businesses, the Government of Canada has decided to allow international students in Canada to work more than 20-hours per week. Retail positions are a great fit for international students to work part-time as it offers flexible schedules (good for coordinating with school schedules) and merchandise discounts (save on clothes/necessities).

Regardless whether you are a student or full time worker, retail positions offer plenty of benefits:

  • Gain experience in many fields, from marketing to finance
  • Become more resilient to the different customer interactions
  • Work on sales and communication skills
  • Physical exercise
  • Overcome social anxiety
